2025/26 in your community: Cornwall
It's been a busy year in Cornwall, and we're looking forward to entering the new year with some exciting projects and activities in your community.
Below are some projects we completed in 2025, and some community activities happening in Penzance this January.
Garden project in Launceston enhances communal space
A garden project at our scheme Station Court in Launceston improves the communal outdoor areas.
It was started after a Housing Officer highlighted the opportunity to improve it as many residents here enjoy spending time in the shared gardens, making the enhancement of these spaces welcome.
The residents were invited to take part in volunteer days designed to refresh the garden, remove old or damaged furniture, and reuse items.

Over several weeks, our Community Connector, Simon Cohen spoke with residents to hear their views on the garden and its future.
As part of the project, the condition of the external boundary walls was assessed, as planters had been in place for several years. One planter was removed due to deterioration and was found not to have damaged the wall beneath.
Residents agreed that the remaining planters still had value, and after extensive weeding, they were replanted using existing daffodil bulbs.
A large planter that had reached the end of its life was also removed. A resident volunteered to replant the flowers, and a list of preferred plants was provided for new slimline planters.
Residents have really enjoyed the work completed so far. These replacements offer improved access for residents and are easier to maintain. Their raised design also supports residents with mobility challenges, enabling easier participation in gardening activities.
Supporting residents to reduce water and save money on energy costs
We partnered with South West Water to provide advice on water tariffs and help residents reduce their energy bills.
As part of the initiative, we contacted 460 customers and door-to-door visits carried out in Newquay to ensure residents were aware of the lowest tariff available to them, and we also left information for residents who were not at home.

We found 33 homes could be eligible for reduced water tariffs or could benefit from speaking directly with South West Water.
The engagement offered an opportunity to speak with residents about their experiences, including the practical steps they are taking to manage rising costs.
Alison Knight, our Community Connector, said: “I really enjoyed coming to meet our residents in Newquay and the surrounding areas.
“It was amazing to hear the range of creative measures people were taking to keep their water bills low, and that many people were accessing Water Care and Water Sure SWW’s discount tariffs. Skye from SWW was really friendly, very enthusiastic, and helpful to our residents.”
Residents who are struggling with the amount that their water bill is costing, may be eligible for a lower tariff and they can contact South West Water to find out with possible savings between 15 to 85 per cent.
As bills have increased, it may be that residents who were not eligible before are now eligible for a cheaper tariff.
South West Water also provides free water saving devices, but you have to answer some online questions first to receive the device. To contact the South West Water team, call: 0344 346 1010 or www.southwestwater.co.uk
