Stay safe when using external contractors at your home
We’re reminding customers about the importance of taking care when arranging work at their home after a recent incident involving accidental damage to a gas supply.
A customer had employed a gardener to clear an overgrown garden, including brambles and ivy growing up the walls of the property. During the work, mechanical tools were used and a gas main was accidentally damaged.
Unfortunately, the damage was not reported at the time, resulting in a significant gas leak. As well as leading to repair costs for the customer, the leak created a serious safety risk and could have resulted in an explosion.
Thankfully, a neighbour noticed the smell of gas and heard a hissing sound coming from the damaged pipework. They immediately contacted Wales & West Utilities, who sent an engineer to isolate the gas supply and make the area safe before notifying LiveWest.
Our Gas Safe engineer attended the property and carried out the necessary repairs, allowing the customer to be reconnected safely and have their heating and hot water restored.
While this incident had a positive outcome, it is an important reminder that any work carried out around your home, especially in gardens and outdoor areas, can pose risks if contractors are unaware of underground or hidden services.
Tips for staying safe when hiring contractors
Before arranging for a contractor to carry out work at your property, please remember:
- Check whether you need to notify LiveWest before work begins. Your tenancy agreement may require you to get permission for certain alterations or improvements to your home or garden.
- Make sure contractors are aware of any services that supply your property, including gas, electricity, water, telecommunications and cable services.
- If any accidental damage occurs, report it immediately so repairs can be arranged and any safety risks can be addressed as quickly as possible.
- Use reputable contractors and check their credentials. Websites such as Checkatrade can help you find qualified and reviewed tradespeople.
- Any work involving gas appliances must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. You must also provide LiveWest with a copy of the Landlord Gas Safety Record (LGSR) where required.
