You are responsible for this

We are responsible for the removal of any larger pests, or pest infestations, such as rats and mice from your home only if the infestation is due to an outstanding repair or structural fault that we are responsible for.

We are responsible for minor infestations such as wasps, flies and fleas, cockroaches, bedbugs, and ants in an internal communal area such as shared hallways or stairs in blocks or schemes, but if identified within an individual home it is the customers responsibility to treat.

It will be your responsibility for the removal of larger pests in your garden.

It will also be your responsibility for minor infestations in your home or garden.

For full advice on what is your responsibility with pests, please see our repairs service standard, and also our summary of responsibilities

Have you covered or removed all exposed food in your home or garden? Back to top

Most animals require a combination of food, water and shelter.

Make sure to remove or cover all food in your home and garden, including any bird seed that may have fallen onto the ground from any feeders.

Have you checked that all household recycling is securely stored? Back to top

Ensure all of your household recycling is securely placed in the bins provided and that doors and lids are firmly closed.

Have you removed possible nesting sites in your garden? Back to top

Keep your garden clean and tidy by removing any possible nesting sites.

Typical nesting areas are usually found:

  • under rubbish, timber or wood piles
  • in drain pipes
  • underneath and in sheds, out houses or garages.

Aim to keep these areas clear of food that would attract pests.

Have you tried natural pest barriers? Back to top

There are many natural pest deterrents that you can use around your home and garden. For example peppermint oil can discourage insects from coming into your garden and it will mask the scent of vegetable plants.

If you find pests in your garden such as slugs and snails, you can use slug barrier pellets and pour this in a circle around plants. This will stop them from crawling on and eating plants in your garden.

Use plastic milk bottles to guard garden plants Back to top

You can use a large plastic milk bottle (6 pints) with the bottom cut out and place this over garden plants to keep birds and pests away.

Should you try a natural pesticide in your garden? Back to top

You can buy a natural pesticide from a garden or DIY store which you can spray on plants to deter pests like aphids, caterpillars and whitefly.
