How often should I test my smoke alarms?
You should test all your smoke alarms:
- Once a month.
- When they’re first installed.
- After you’ve been away from home (for example, after a holiday).
- After any electrical work has been carried out in your home.
Regular testing helps make sure the alarm, sounder and sensors are all working as they should.
How to test your smoke alarm
Testing your smoke alarm is quick and easy:
- Check the power light Make sure the green light on the alarm is on continuously. This shows the alarm is receiving power.
- Check for warning lights There shouldn’t be any flashing yellow or red lights. Flashing lights can mean there’s a fault that needs looking into.
- Press the test button Press and hold the test or hush button for up to 10 seconds, until the alarm sounds. If it sounds loudly, the alarm is working properly. Once you release the button, the alarm should stop.
If you have more than one alarm in your home, make sure you test all of them.
Important safety tips
- Never use candles, matches or smoke to test your alarm. This can damage it and could be dangerous.
- If the alarm doesn’t sound when you test it, it may be faulty and need repairing or replacing.
- If you notice regular beeping or flashing warning lights, this could mean there’s a problem that needs to be checked.
Why testing matters
A smoke alarm that isn’t working won’t warn you if there’s a fire. Testing only takes a few seconds, but it can make a big difference to your safety and give you peace of mind.
