We’re pleased to share an important update that strengthens your security as a shared owner. From 27 December 2025, the way housing providers, like LiveWest, can seek possession of shared ownership homes is changing.
What’s changing?
Previously, shared ownership leases were treated like tenancies, meaning landlords could apply (using something called a Section 8 notice) to repossesses a home quickly if rent and service charges were not paid or for any other breaches of the lease.
Under the new Renters’ Rights Act, this will no longer apply. Instead, landlords must follow a different process called forfeiture, which gives shared owners more protection.
Why is this good for shared owners?
- Greater security: You now have the same protections as leaseholders who are not shared owners.
- More time to resolve issues: If you ever face financial challenges, there’s a longer process before repossession action could start.
