Simple steps to help reduce plastic waste

Take simple steps towards a more sustainable lifestyle with our practical tips for reducing plastic waste at home.
Filling up water bottle

Plastic Free July is a global movement that encourages people to reduce their use of single-use plastics through simple, everyday actions. The challenge may only last a month, but the habits we build can make a difference all year round.

The good news is that you do not need to make huge lifestyle changes to have an impact. Small swaps can add up over time, helping to reduce waste, protect the environment and create cleaner communities.

How to get involved with reducing plastic use

Carry a reusable water bottle

Bringing a refillable bottle with you can help reduce the number of plastic bottles you use throughout the year. Keep one in your bag, car or at work so it is always to hand.

Remember your shopping bags

Keeping reusable bags near your front door or in the boot of your car can help make them part of your routine. It is a simple switch that can prevent hundreds of plastic bags being used over time.

Choose reusable cups and containers

Whether you are grabbing a coffee or picking up lunch, bringing your own cup or food container can help cut down on waste.

Buy loose fruit and vegetables where possible

Choosing unpackaged produce can help reduce unnecessary plastic packaging. It can also encourage more mindful shopping and reduce food waste.

Refill instead of replacing

Look out for refill options for household products such as cleaning supplies, shampoo and washing-up liquid.

Pause before accepting single-use items

Straws, cutlery, takeaway containers and other disposable items are often offered by default. Taking a moment to consider whether you need them can make a bigger difference than you might think.

July may be coming to an end, but there is no reason the principles of Plastic Free July cannot continue throughout the year. By keeping a few simple habits in place, we can all play our part in creating cleaner, greener communities for the future.
