Young people will be able to sail with the Trust at Polkerris, in St Austell Bay. The Brannel school already has a programme of rebuilding a Sadler yacht with its pupils, giving them useful boat building skills for working in the marine industry.
We have donated a £500 community bursary to support the work of the Trust to get young people active and interested in this water-based activity.
Mai Evans, Community Development Worker at LiveWest said: “We are pleased to support the Roseland Youth Sailing Trust in their provision of opportunities for young people in our neighbourhoods, often for those who find school most challenging. Each of them will work towards internationally recognised Royal Yacht Association certificates which could assist them in obtaining work on the water in the future.”
The Roseland Youth Sailing Trust realised that even with subsidised lessons, for many children sailing was still not accessible for the financial, opportunity and organisational reasons. The Trust was set up to change this for as many young people as possible – particularly because the sea is such an abundant resource in Cornwall.
Dina Croft Trustee of The Roseland Youth Sailing Trust said: “We are pleased to team up with LiveWest and the Brannel School. We believe there are numerous benefits to children participating in water sports, often especially for those who find school most challenging. Dinghy sailing manifestly promotes health and wellbeing and develops skills that improve children’s ability to succeed in life and work.”
Andy Edmonds Head Teacher from the Brannel School said: “Our Brannel Challenge is providing sailing lessons during the school day for 14 children, from September 2018. We expect some of the children from Foxhole and St Dennis who have already had sailing lessons at primary school will be very keen to take up these places. The children have the chance to learn to sail, windsurf, kayak and Stand Up Paddleboard. Each of them will work towards internationally recognised RYA certificates which could assist them in obtaining work on the water in the future.”
