Giving things a second chance this September

This September, we're giving things a second chance in our mission to creating greener futures together.
Second-hand September

For many of us, September is a time of new beginnings. Children go back to school, evenings start to draw in, and we take stock before the rush of winter.

Most years at this time we focus on the importance of selling on used items or buying items second-hand, but this year we wanted to reflect on the power of second chances for people, for homes, and for the things we use every day.

What have we been up to?

A fresh start through second-hand

Recently, one of our new, vulnerable customers was facing the daunting challenge of moving into a new home with very little to their name; no beds for her children or herself, white goods, nor drawers for clothes. Starting again can be overwhelming, not just financially, but emotionally.

Through our Vulnerability Package, they received £400 to spend at Emmaus, a local second-hand furniture store. Instead of being handed whatever was available, they were able to choose the items they wanted and needed including a dining table and chairs where the family could eat together, three beds with mattresses, a television and more.

It wasn’t just furniture. It was a chance to rebuild, to create a space that truly felt like home. And because it was second-hand, it also meant less waste, fewer emissions and more for their money.

Pride

Our Pride celebrations this summer were vibrant and joyful and now those materials will continue their journey. Instead of single-use, we’re finding ways to reuse banners, flags, and decorations for future events and displays. This year, we also used promotional QR codes rather than flyers, and gave away seeds to minimise waste and promote nature recovery.

By giving our Pride materials a second life and making sure they can be used in multiple contexts, we’re honouring both our commitment to inclusivity and to sustainability.

Retaining our carpets

We’ve started to rethink the way we manage carpets between tenancies. Previously, carpets were almost always removed, even when they were still in good condition. Now, around 50% of carpets are retained, where they’re safe, clean and suitable for the next resident.

That means less waste and a warmer welcome for new residents, helping to reduce the huge 400,000 tonnes of carpet the UK throws away each year.

Small choices, big difference

Whether it’s furniture, clothes, or everyday items, shopping second-hand is good for both your pocket and the planet. Here are some quick tips:

  • Visit your local charity shops or online sites like Vinted, Depop and eBay – you never know what bargains are waiting.
  • Choose quality over quantity. Well-made items last longer and age better.
  • Get creative – a tin of paint, some new handles, or a simple repair can transform an item.

Extending the life of clothing by just nine months reduces its carbon, water and waste footprint by up to 20%!

How are you joining in this Second-hand September?

We’ve told you what we’re doing, so we’d love to know what you are doing to give yourself, or your things, a second chance.
