Did you know that fires in your home can be started by reflective materials?

In hot, sunny weather, reflective materials such as mirrors, glass tables, photo frames can cause fires to start when exposed to direct sunlight. The rays of sunlight can be reflected onto materials such as curtains, paper or furniture which can catch fire due to the heat.

How can you reflective fires be avoided?

To reduce the risk of fires such as these starting, you should take a look around your home to see whether reflective materials are kept in places where they are likely to be in direct sunlight, for example on windowsills.

If you see anything which you think could be a risk, you should move this to somewhere which is not in direct sunlight.

Whilst the risk is much higher in the summer when the weather is warmer, there is still a risk in the winter in particularly sunny weather.

You can also book a Home Fire Safety Visit through your local Fire Service. As part of these visits, the Fire Service will identify any risks in your home and suggest ways you can reduce these. You can also carry out your own fire safety checks
