A mum and her baby son secure their first home together through an affordable housing scheme in Cornwall.

Samantha Curnow and her eight-month-old son, Archie, were on the hunt for a home that offered more space and security after previously living in a small bedsit near Camborne.

With 30 new socially-rented homes in Gwel Woon, Troon becoming available through LiveWest, and thanks to a local connection criteria ensuring priority for local people, Samantha was able to secure a home in her childhood town.

Samantha Curnow, our resident, said: “I had my son and so the previous place wasn’t really big enough for us anymore. I couldn’t have many toys for him and there was no garden.

“My family is from Troon and it’s a really nice area so, we wanted to be able to stay here. My mum lives across the road and lots of other family too. It was really important for me to stay in this area because everyone is here.

“I was relieved to find a home because this can be long term and it’s a weight off my shoulders to have found somewhere and be moved in.”

Samantha continues to share the positive impact the home has have on their lives.

She said: “The garden is really big and so is the kitchen. My son can also have his own room, and he has more choice with everything, he’s also got a garden he can play in.

“The process with LiveWest went well and it was easy, so it wasn’t a long process. The community is really nice, there are lovely walks here. Everyone knows each other and helps each other out too.”

LiveWest partnered with Gilbert and Goode, and the development also had funding from Homes England’s Strategic Funding Grant. This new development in a vibrant and rural area that has helped local people stay connected to their communities.

Thoughtfully designed with sustainability and environmental impact in mind, all the homes achieved an energy performance certificate (EPC) rating of A. They benefit from PV in the roofs, air source heat pumps, solar panels and EV charging points.
