Busting common anti-social behaviour (ASB) myths

We work hard to solve ASB in our communities, so it’s important our residents know what counts as ASB and what doesn’t.

At LiveWest we understand that anti-social behaviour (ASB) can be disruptive and upsetting to communities. In view of this we have recently expanded our team to improve how we can tackle ASB in our communities.

However, there are many myths and misconceptions about what ASB is and how we can deal with it. This ASB Awareness week we want to tackle some of the most common misunderstandings.

Myth: Children playing is ASB

Busted: Children playing outside is not anti-social behaviour

It’s completely normal, and healthy, for children to play in communal areas, streets, or near their homes. We will not take action just because children are playing.
If the play is becoming disruptive or concerning, like poor road safety or balls landing in neighbour's gardens, these issues can mostly be resolved by a friendly conversation.
However, if there is behaviour that goes beyond reasonable play, like property damage, threats, or persistent loud noise, this could be considered ASB. In these cases we will investigate and take appropriate action.

Myth: Only noise after dark is ASB

Busted: There is no cut off time for noise that counts as ASB

Noise can become ASB if it is persistent, loud, and disruptive. If someone is playing their music too loud after dark but they turn it down when you ask, this is not ASB. If they are doing it persistently and are ignoring any requests to lower the noise, this could be ASB.

Myth: LiveWest can deal with criminal behaviour in isolation

Busted: Criminal activity must be reported to the Police

When we receive reports of criminal behaviour such as drug dealing, assault, or threats, we always advise customers to contact the Police first. For these matters we rely on their investigations and evidence to take further steps.
While we are committed to supporting our communities and will work with the Police and other agencies, we cannot act effectively without official evidence. Please report criminal activity to the Police as soon as possible.

Myth: LiveWest regularly carries out evictions because of ASB

Busted: Eviction is always a last resort

Eviction is a legal process that requires a court order, and that is only granted in the most serious or persistent cases.
Before we consider eviction we explore every possible alternative – including mediation, support services, and warnings. The court will only grant an eviction order if we can provide evidence of significant ASB and show that other interventions have failed.

Myth: LiveWest can stop people riding E-scooters because it is anti-social behaviour

Busted: E-scooter use does not fall under anti-social behaviour

LiveWest cannot manage E-scooter use as it is a criminal matter. It is illegal to ride privately owned E-scooters on roads, pavements, or anywhere except private land with the landowner's permission. When we receive reports of illegal E-scooter use, we always advise customers to contact the Police.

Working together for safer communities

We want all of our customers to live in safe, respectful, and thriving communities. If you're experiencing issues please do report them – but also understand what qualifies as ASB and how different agencies, including LiveWest and the Police, work together to respond appropriately.

If you have any questions or need advice, our team is here to help.

For emergencies or criminal activity, always call 999. For non-emergencies, report to 101 or via the Police website.

For ASB issues, you can contact LiveWest directly through our customer portal or by calling our customer service team.
