What are smart meters?

Smart meters are the new generation of gas and electricity meters being rolled out across Britain.

Smart meters measure how much gas and electricity you’re using and send this information to your energy supplier, allowing you to get accurate billing.

They come with an in-home display screen (shown in the illustration on this page) which shows you how much energy you are using in pounds and pence, so you can know exactly where your spending is going.

If you would benefit from one, you can get an accessible in-home display from most energy suppliers. These have large tactile buttons, a text-to-speech function, and a high contrast display.

What are the benefits of a smart meter?

1. Potential to save money through accurate billing

Smart meters record your energy usage and send the readings to your supplier at least monthly. This means you won't be charged for any energy that you don't use.

2. Take control of your spending

Smart meters come with an in-home display showing you your energy usage in pounds and pence. This puts you in control of your spending, so you can spend money on what matters to your family and keep your home warm.

3. No need to do meter readings

Your smart meter will record your energy usage and send the readings to your supplier for you, saving you time and stress.

How do smart meters work?

Smart meters record your energy use in the same way as a traditional meter. The difference is that they then send the readings automatically to your energy supplier using a secure smart data network, allowing your supplier to prepare an accurate bill.

Smart meters also come with an in-home display screen that shows you exactly how much energy you're using in pounds and pence, in near real time.

How to get a smart meter for your home

You can request a smart meter from your energy supplier.

Otherwise, your supplier will be in touch when your smart meter is ready to be installed. Your supplier will send someone out to fit your smart meter and in-home display.
